HC Deb 17 February 1993 vol 219 cc261-2W
Sir David Steel

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what estimates he has made of the change in the price of imported coal in 1992 due to currency fluctuations.

Mr. Eggar

Based on figures of spot purchases of coal delivered to Europe, published by theInternational Coal Report, the sterling price of imported coal declined from 93p per gigajoule in January 1992 to 74p per GJ in September, mainly due to a decline in the dollar price of imported coal. The price increased to 92p per GJ in December due to the exchange rate changes.
