HC Deb 15 February 1993 vol 219 c50W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will list the names of schools in each local education authority which have opted out of local education authorities and have not repaid debts to their local education authorities; and what estimate he has made of the total amount of unpaid debts.

Mr. Forth

The Department does not keep the information centrally. It is the duty of the Education Assets Board to identify the liabilities which transfer to grant-maintained schools and such matters need to be looked at on a case by case basis. All schools, including grant-maintained schools, should keep within their budgets.

Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for Education (1) when he will announce his decision on the application by Grays school, Essex, for grant-maintained status;

(2) when he will announce his decision on the application by William Edwards school, Grays, Essex, for grant-maintained status.

Mr. Forth

My right hon. Friend has today announced that he has approved the applications of both Grays school and William Edwards school, with minor modifications to their admission arrangements. They will become self-governing state schools (grant-maintained) on 1 April 1993.
