Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what was the(a) number and (b) percentage, in terms of the total population, of economically inactive males in the United Kingdom, at the latest available date.

Mr. McLoughlin

The most recent results from the labour force survey for the whole of the United Kingdom are for spring (March to May) 1992. At that time there were a total of 5,733,000 economically inactive males representing 26.3 per cent. of the total male population aged 16 and over.
