Mr. Cousins

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will estimate the effect on the number of unemployment benefit claimants of the abatement at 55 years introduced on 1 January 1989 for occupational pensioners, and 9 October 1989 for personal pensioners(a) at the point of introduction and (b) currently.

The information requested is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

However, the numbers of persons aged 55 years and over whose unemployment benefit is abated in full due to their receipt of an occupational and/or personal pension is shown in the table.
