To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many people are employed by his Department in matters relating to defence exports; and if he will make a statement.

In 1993–94 the following staff funded by my Department will be employed on matters relating to defence exports:

Staff
Export assistance to industry 271
Export policy and control 45

In addition, a further 254 staff will be employed on project management activities financed by overseas customers.
