§ Mr. David MarshallTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many miles of motorway in Scotland are currently(a) open, (b) under construction and (c) planned either (i) as completely new motorway or (ii) as existing motorway being widened.
§ Lord James Douglas-Hamilton[holding answer 5 February 1993]: In Scotland there are 154 miles of trunk road motorway and a further 15 miles of non-trunk motorway, responsibility for which lies with local authorities.
Twenty-one miles of new motorway is currently under construction with a further 63 miles of new motorway planned.
Much of the motorway network constructed in the 1960s and 1970s is reaching the end of its structural life and requires major maintenance or reconstruction. Some of this work may involve widening.
