HC Deb 08 February 1993 vol 218 c483W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what studies are made by his Department of transuranic radioactivity in marine mammals off the Welsh coast and in Welsh estuaries.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food directorate of fisheries regularly undertakes monitoring of transuranic radioactivity in fish and shellfish off the Welsh coast. Details of this monitoring can be found in the "Aquatic Environment Monitoring Report No. 29—Radioactivity in Surface and Coastal Waters off the British Isles 1990", copies of which are in the Library of the House.

No routine transuranic radioactivity monitoring is undertaken in respect of sea mammals because they are not normally consumed by the general public.
