To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list by name the environmentally sensitive areas currently designated in England, and in respect of each state the area covered, the payment per hectare and the total annual payments which have been made each year since their introduction.

Mr. Curry

The environmentally sensitive areas in England are listed in the table with details of the areas covered by each designation. In each area there is a range of payments per hectare reflecting the different levels of environmental management which participants in the scheme agree to undertake. Details are set out in the relevant statutory instruments and in the published scheme literature. Total annual payments since the schemes were introduced were given in reply to the hon. Member for Edinburgh, East (Dr. Strang) on 14 December 1992,Hansard column 66.
