HC Deb 03 February 1993 vol 218 c217W
Mr. Adley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what are the most recent figures available for the cost per mile of road maintenance in the United Kingdom; and how the figure is calculated.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

In 1991–92 the average cost of maintenance for the United Kingdom road network was £10,400 per mile. This figure is calculated from information collected by the Department of Transport, Scottish Office, Welsh Office and the Department of Environment (Northern Ireland). It is based on all types of maintenance expenditure, including structural, routine and winter, on all roads, both national and local.
