To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement regarding the rate of progress of cleaning up the oil spillage in the Shetland Islands and its effect on wildlife and agriculture.

Very good progress has been made in cleaning up the visible oil pollution from the wrecked tanker MV Braer. Comprehensive arrangements have been put in place to monitor the immediate and longer term effects. My right hon. Friend outlined the steps taken by the Government in his statement of 11 January. The ecological steering group has been set up and will certainly be monitoring wildlife and agriculture.
