To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will discuss with the European Commission the possibility of upgrading Merseyside from objective 2 to objective 1 status within the framework of EC regional and social funds.

Mr. Sainsbury

The Government are currently considering which regions, including Merseyside, should be put forward, for special reasons, for eligibility under objective 1 of the EC structural funds.
