HC Deb 01 February 1993 vol 218 c35W
Mr. Home Robertson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many railway journeys were made by service personnel using travel warrants in the latest available year; what was the total cost of that travel; and what were the normal BR fares charged for journeys over an equivalent aggregate distance.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

In financial year 1991–92 the latest year for which figures are available, 703,000 warrants were issued to service personnel. Information on the number of journeys is not available as a warrant can cover a single, return or season ticket. The total cost of this travel was £32,038,000 after discounts had been applied. Details of normal British Rail (BR) fares charged for journeys over an equivalent aggregate distance are not known. All service warrants for the year in question were charged at the normal BR fares however, to which an agreed percentage discount was applied. Season tickets were exempt from this arrangement.
