To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many press officers his Department has employed in each year since 1983.

There are currently 16 press officers employed by the Department of the Environment's information directorate.

Figures for prior years on the composition of the information directorate as a whole are published each year within the management information system for Ministers—MINIS—dating back to 1979 and are available in the Library.
