To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much expenditure there has been on roadworks on the A41 between Spur road and the Finchley road garage in the last five years.

During the five-year period ending March 1993, some £5.6 million has been spent on improvement and major maintenance schemes on the A41 between A410 Spur road, the north circular road and A598 Finchley road, including the Al Barnet bypass but not the Great North way. In addition, £800,000 per annum is spent on routine and minor maintenance works.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what plans he has for further improvements to the A41 between Spur road and the Finchley road garage after 1994.

Subject to availability of resources, the following improvements and substantial maintenance schemes are currently planned over the three years from April 1994, for the A4 I between A410 Spur road and A598 Finchley road, including the Al Barnet bypass.

They will be programmed to cause the minimum of disruption and inconvenience.

Improvement schemes Five Ways Corner—Junction improvements; Edgware Way—Local safety schemes between Spur road and Apex corner.

Road maintenance Hendon Way—Carriageway strengthening between Brent Cross and Finchley road; Watford Way—Carriageway strengthening between Mill hill and Five Ways corner; Edgware Way—Carriageway strengthening between A410 Spur road and The Grove.

Structure Maintenance Hendon Way—Repairs to Brent Cross flyover; —Strengthening of Brent Cross east subway; —Waterproofing of the subways at The Burroughs, Hendon Central, Rundell crescent, Ridgeway hill, Hall lane, Sunny hill park and Greyhound hill. Watford Way—Reconstruction of Bunns lane bridge.
