To ask the Secretary of State for Health what percentage of elderly people living in residential care homes in North Yorkshire county council are accommodated in(a) private sector homes and (b) council-owned homes.

Mr. Bowis

The latest available figures are for 31 March 1992. The percentage of residents aged 65 and over in staffed residential care homes for elderly and younger physically disabled people, in the North Yorkshire local authority were, 59 per cent. in private homes and 28 per cent. in local authority homes. The remaining 13 per cent. of residents are living in homes run by voluntary bodies.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many units of accommodation are provided by residential care homes owned by North Yorkshire county council; and how many vacancies remain.

The latest figures available are for 31 March 1992. There were 1,797 places in staffed residential care homes for all client groups, of which 267 were not occupied.
