HC Deb 14 December 1993 vol 234 c572W
Sir Teddy Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the total cost of the European Parliament in the most recent year for which figures are available; and what estimate he has made of the costs borne from United Kingdom public funds on the basis of the net contributions of member states to the European Union.

Mr. Goodlad

Expenditure under the European Parliament's budget for 1992, net of receipts, was 538.241 mecu, approx £419,882,000. Member states contribute to the European Community budget as a whole, not to individual programmes. The net United Kingdom contribution in 1992 was 2,387 mecu.

Sir Teddy Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what procedures are available to determine the limits of the consideration of issues by the European Parliament.

Mr. Goodlad

The issues considered by the European Parliament will generally be determined by its role as set out in the EC treaties and the treaty on European Union. It is for the Parliament itself to regulate its internal procedures.
