To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what statutory requirements and assurances he requires before granting approval for a city town centre formula 2 motor race.

Mr. Key

Section 12 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 prohibits races or trials of speed on public ways. However, the Birmingham City Council Act 1985 allows Birmingham city council to close specified roads on specified dates for motor racing purposes.
