Mr. Patrick Thompson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assistance he is giving to enable the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to respond to emergency situations in the current year.

My noble Friend the Minister for Overseas Development has approved an additional contribution to UNHCR of £1.35 million—equivalent to $2 million—to help replenish its emergency fund. This will enable UNHCR to continue to make initial responses to emergencies, in advance of putting together a longer-term assistance programme.

Britain's overall contributions to UNHCR activities this year now amounts to £50.75 million.
