HL Deb 07 December 1993 vol 550 cc66-7WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they have taken in the General Assembly of the United Nations to see that the resources allocated to the United Nations Centre for Human Rights in Geneva, and the special procedures section in particular, are adequate for the scale and scope of the tasks imposed on them.

Lord Mackay of Ardbrecknish

The General Assembly is expected to take action on the question of resources for the UN Centre for Human Rights this week. The resources now available to the centre for human rights do not allow it to carry out all the tasks mandated to it. We support the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to increase substantially the resources available to the centre from within existing and future regular budgets, through redeployment from areas of lower priority.
