To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what information he possesses on the role of the Ibn Al Haytham centre in Iraq.

Mr. Hanley

The Ibn Al Haytham missile research and development centre was established by the Iraqis in March 1992 and is located 15 km north-east of Baghdad. Its primary purpose is to conduct research and development on missiles with ranges of up to 150 km. This work is permitted under UN SCR 687 (1991). The establishment has been visited by six UNSCOM inspections.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many experts his Department has contributed to the United Nations special commission missions to Iraq since May 1991.

Mr. Hanley

Some 50 personnel from my Department have participated in support of United Nations special commission missions to Iraq since May 1991.
