To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how much his Department spends annually on(a) television advertising, (b) radio advertising and (c) press advertising; and what were the corresponding figures for 1985 and 1979.

The Department's overall advertising and publicity budget for 1993–94 is £10.8 million. Breakdown by media category will not be available until the end of the financial year. In 1992–93 expenditure by media category was as follows:

Expenditure on advertising and promotional material by the Department in 1985–86 was £1.2 million and in 1979–80 £70,000. Figures for television, radio and newspaper advertising and other promotional material are not available separately for those years. The figures for 1985–86 and 1979–80 refer only to Employment Department expenditure. They do not cover expenditure by the former Manpower Services Commission.
