To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much liquid radioactive waste was dealt with by the present liquid radioactive waste treatment plant at AWE Aldermaston during 1992.

The amount of liquid radioactive waste treated at AWE Aldermaston during 1992 was 12,450 m3.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much liquid radioactive waste is expected to be dealt with by the new A91 building at Aldermaston when it becomes fully operational.

Mr. Aitken

The specification for the A91 plant is based upon an annual throughput of 15,000 m3 per annum. However, it is expected that waste minimisation initiatives will reduce the annual throughput to 10,000 m3 per annum by the time the plant becomes operational.
