§ Mr. Redmond
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how the current cost threshold for answering parliamentary questions is calculated.

§ Mr. Dorrell
The threshold is set at a level which is eight times the average direct cost of staff involved in answering written parliamentary questions. The average direct cost is updated annually by indexation. The cost threshold is increased in £50 steps, rounded upwards.
