To ask the Secretary of State for Education what is the annual cost to the Department of the car service for Ministers; and how many vehicles are involved.

In the financial year 1992–93, the Government car service for Ministers cost the Department £217,197.48. Five vehicles were involved for the majority of the year. In addition, this figure includes eight days' use of one further vehicle for the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State with responsibility for sport, whose portfolio fell within the remit of the Department for Education until 8 April 1992.
