HC Deb 29 April 1993 vol 223 c494W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what assessment she has made of the implications of the European medical directive for the ability of British registered medical practitioners to practise elsewhere in the European Community; and if she will make a statement.

Dr. Mawhinney

Last year the European Commission expressed concern that the system in place in the United Kingdom for the mutual recognition of specialist qualifications might not comply with the 1975 European medical directives. A working group was established to review United Kingdom arrangements for specialist medical training in the light of these directives. The group has produced comprehensive recommendations and its report will be issued shortly for a period of consultation.
