HC Deb 29 April 1993 vol 223 c502W
Mr. Mullin

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has about the number of mine-clearing units operating under the UN mandate in Cambodia; and how many mines have been lifted as a result of those operations.

Mr. Goodlad

[pursuant to his reply 22 April 1993]: We have received further information from our mission in Phnom Penh.

UNTAC has now redeployed its resources. As of 17 April, there were three international training teams and 20 supervisory teams operating in Cambodia. A total of 2,184 Khmer deminers, 51 Khmer supervisors, and 21 Khmer instructors had been trained. A further 32 deminars, 24 supervisors and 27 instructors were still undergoing training. Twenty-six platoons of trained Khmer deminers were operating under UN Supervisory teams in Cambodia, while another six were operating under NGO auspices.

We continue to strees to UNTAC the importance of its mine clearance training activities to which we have contributed personnel.
