Mr. David Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment when he plans to establish the local government reorganisation staff commission; whom he intends to appoint as its members; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. and learned Friend has today laid an order, made under section 23 of the Local Government Act 1992, to set up a staff commission. The commission, to be known as the Local Government Staff Commission (England), will be established formally on 13 May 1993.

I am inviting the following people to serve as members of the Local Government Staff Commission (England):

  • Alan Atherton
  • Colin Jeynes
  • Judith Lovelace
  • I have asked Mr. Atherton to serve as chairman.

This is a strong, independent commission whose members have a range of experience in local government and staffing matters.
