To ask the President of the Board of Trade what considerations underlay his Department's decision to indemnify British Coal against any adverse legal consequences of its action in respect of the trustees of the British Coal staff superannuation scheme.

Mr. Eggar

No indemnity has been given or offered to British Coal for such legal costs.

Mr. Tipping

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what recent discussions he has had with the chairman of British Coal about the staff superannuation scheme; and if he will make a statement.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what discussions he has had recently with the chairman of British Coal about surpluses in the corporation's staff superannuation fund.
