To ask the President of the Board of Trade what is his Department's estimate of the number of wholly 65-plus-year-old households that have(a) gas and (b) electricity connected to their homes, for the latest available year.

[holding answer 14 April 1993]: My Department estimates that in 1991 the numbers of wholly 65-plus-year-old households connected to (a) gas and (b) electricity were 3.6 million and 5.1 million respectively.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what is his Department's estimate of the total income for(a) gas and (b) electricity undertakings from domestic and standing charges.

[holding answer 14 April 1993]: My Department estimates that the total amounts raised by gas and electricty undertakings in 1992 from standing charges on domestic customers in the United Kingdom were £0.6 billion and £1.1 billion respectively.
