Implementation of the Woolf Report
The Home Secretary has asked me to reply to your Question about the steps taken to implement the recommendations of the Woolf Report.
The Government's response to the Woolf Report is set out in its White Paper "Custody, Care and Justice" (Cm 1647), published in September 1991. This described an ambitious programme of reforms. Our progress in implementing these is set out in the Home Secretary's letter of 8 February responding to Mr. Amess' Question on 14 January, a copy of which has been placed in the Library of the House.
Our plans for the future are set out in the Prison Service's Corporate Plan, a copy of which has been placed in the Library of the House. This makes it clear that one of the Service's key themes for the next three years will be the implementation of futher reforms flowing from the White Paper.
