To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the travel companies which failed to renew their ATOL licence by 5 pm on 31 March; and what steps he has taken to protect holidaymakers from the consequences of this.

The Civil Aviation Authority, which administers the air travel organisers' licence, ATOL, system, carries out an annual review of all ATOL holders. Details of travel organisers which did not have their ATOL renewed by 31 March 1993 are given in the lists, which were published by the CAA on 1 April. The lists cover travel organisers which have applied for renewal but which had not then fulfilled the necessary conditions and those which have not applied for renewal.

Inclusion in the list of travel organisers which have applied for their licences to be renewed does not necessarily mean that the CAA has doubts about an organiser's financial resources. The authority has agreed arrangements where necessary for other ATOL holders to provide cover on a temporary basis until the organisers concerned are able to fulfil the conditions for renewal of their own licences.
