To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if she will make a statement on the future of the Health and Safety Executive's electrical equipment certification service.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what legislation would be necessary to privatise the electrical equipment certification service; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

Following a recent consultants' report, which recommended privatisation of the electrical equipment certification service, the future of the service is being considered by the Health and Safety Executive and the Health and Safety Commission.

Privatisation would require primary legislation and we will be seeking parliamentary approval for powers which would enable privatisation to proceed.
