HL Deb 29 October 1992 vol 539 c106WA
Lord Houghton of Sowerby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many alleged pit bull terriers are in the custody of the police, in what places they are held, and how many have been in detention for more than six months; and

Why owners of alleged pit bull terriers taken into possession by the police are refused information as to where they are held, are denied access, and are unable to have them inspected by an independent veterinary surgeon or other responsible person to check on their state of health and condition.

Earl Ferrers

Information on the number, location and length of detention of alleged pit bull terriers in police custody is not held centrally and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

Access to dogs held in custody is an operational matter for the chief officer of the force concerned.
