HC Deb 27 October 1992 vol 212 c571W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table showing the market value and the replacement value of the private housing stock as a percentage of money gross domestic product, for each year since 1962.

Mr. Portillo

The most appropriate measure of the market value of the private housing stock for which data are available is the value of residential buildings, published in the personal sector balance sheet. The concept of replacement value of the housing stock is not clear. However, one indirect measure which might be considered is the personal sector net capital stock in dwellings at current replacement cost. Land is included in the balance sheet measure, but not in the capital stock measure. Latest estimates of these series are available on the CSO database which may be accessed through the House of Commons Library. The relevant database identifiers are:

Market value ALLN
Net capital stock EXGV
"Money GDP" CAOB
