To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on Government support for(a) underground and (b) riverbus services to London docklands.

Mr. Norris

(a) the Government have supported London Underground Ltd. in developing the Jubilee line extension, which would greatly improve access to London docklands. We have not authorised the start of construction of the JLE which would take total expenditure to over £1.8 billion, while talks continue on the promised £400 million contribution from the private sector.

(b) We have consistently maintained that Riverbus is, and should remain, a private sector project.
