HC Deb 21 October 1992 vol 212 c325W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland on what grounds the Big Water of Fleet railway viaduct near Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbright was removed from the register of listed structures; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Hector Monro

Big Water of Fleet viaduct was removed from the statutory list of buildings of special historic or architectural interest in 1990–91 in the course of the national re-survey. It was assessed as not meeting the standard required to justify its retention on the list because of the extensive use of brick in strengthening the viaduct.

Although it is no longer a listed structure, the viaduct has been recognised by Dumfries and Galloway regional council in the regional structure plan as an important industrial archaeological site. The council also recognises the contribution made by the impressive span of the structure to the high visual and amenity quality of the locality.
