§ Dr. MawhinneyThe Department has a long history of supporting the valuable work carried out by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and awarded it a three year grant of £241,500 per year which began in 1991. In addition, the "Health of the Nation" gives a commitment to continued support to the leading role played by ASH in disseminating information, encouraging action by others and providing advice and support.
§ Mrs. DunwoodyTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what proposals she has to increase awareness of the long-term effects of smoking during pregnancy on children.
§ Dr. MawhinneyThe Department is providing funding of £1 million over two years towards a Health Education Authority project being run specifically for this purpose. In addition, the "Health of the Nation" gives a commitment to achieve a target of a 30 per cent. reduction in the number of women who smoke at the start of their pregnancy by the year 2000.
