To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the expenditure of his Department(a) on the safe cities programme in the past financial year and (b) on each of the cities included in that programme.

The total expenditure under the safer cities programme in the financial year 1991–92 was £7.2 million of which £2.0 million was for the running costs of the 20 projects including staff salaries, accommodation and other administrative expenditure. A total of £5.2 million was paid in grants to support local crime prevention activity, as follows:
