§ Mr. FlynnTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what new initiatives she plans to reduce the incidence of lung cancer in women.
§ Dr. MawhinneyReducing the incidence of lung cancer in women will mainly depend on reducing the prevalence of smoking. "The Health of the Nation" includes a target to reduce smoking among women from 28 per cent. in 1990 to 20 per cent. by the year 2000. The White Paper sets out a comprehensive strategy to achieve the target, including action on price, health education, ensuring effective controls on advertising and a greater national health service role in reducing smoking.
