HC Deb 19 October 1992 vol 212 c122W
Mrs. Dunwoody

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many days were lost through industrial action by staff in higher education in(a)1978 and(b)1992; and how many separate incidents were involved.

Mr. McLoughlin

A breakdown of industrial action by staff specifically in higher education is not available for 1978. However, a total of 1,000 days were lost in six stoppages of work by staff in all educational services in 1978. This compares with a loss of 27 thousand days in 22 stoppages in 1991, the latest calendar year for which data are available.

As a result of changes in the industrial classification system, data on higher education have been available since 1982. On this basis, a provisional total of 4,000 days have been lost in three stoppages of work by staff in higher education in the eight months to August 1992, the latest period for which statistics are available.
