§ Lord Colwynasked Her Majesty's Government.
Whether in view of the British Medical Association report Cycling Towards Health and Safety they will adopt a policy of unambiguous promotion of cycling.
The Minister of State, Department of Transport (The Earl of Caithness)The Government recognise the value of cycling as a means of local transport and acknowledge its potential health advantages. The BMA report quite rightly drew attention to the need to improve the safety of cyclists if those health benefits are to be realised. The Government are committed to safer cycling and we are working to improve traffic conditions for cyclists. We shall continue to seek ways of achieving this through publicity and by technical advice to highway authorities, who are responsible for providing cycle facilities.
