HC Deb 27 November 1992 vol 214 c922W
Mr. McMaster

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the state of the horticultural industry in Scotland.

Sir Hector Monro

The Scottish raspberry sector stands to benefit substantially from an EC measure to support groups of growers producing raspberries for processing. Under this scheme, adopted in summer 1992, raspberry producer groups will be eligible for EC and United Kingdom funding to support a development programme intended to improve their competitive position. Eligible measures include replanting with new varieties and harvest mechanisation.

The ornamental sector of the industry—hardy nursery stock and bedding plant groups—is currently enjoying buoyant conditions. This was demonstrated recently when the increasingly successful and prestigious Scotgrow exhibition was again staged by this confident sector of the industry.
