HC Deb 23 November 1992 vol 214 cc498-9W
Mrs. Jane Kennedy

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what access to job vacancies exists for people attending job clubs in the Liverpool travel-to-work area.

Mr. McLoughlin

Responsibility for the subject of the question has been delegated to the Employment Service Agency under its chief executive. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from M. E. G. Fogden to Mrs. Jane Kennedy, dated 23 November 1992. As the Employment Service is an Executive Agency the Secretary of State has asked me to write to you direct to respond to your Parliamentary Question to her about what access to job vacancies exists for people attending Jobclubs in the Liverpool travel to work area. This is something which falls within the responsibilities delegated to me as Chief Executive of the Agency. Until recently Jobclubs in the Liverpool travel to work area received copies of vacancies from Jobcentres in their locality as well as providing access to job vacancy advertisements in local newspapers. Jobclub members are also encouraged to make speculative approaches to employers and most people find jobs this way. The circulation of vacancies from the Jobcentres ceased at the beginning of November because very few Jobclub members were finding work by this method. However, following representations from local people it has been agreed that the service will be reinstated where a Jobclub specifically requests it. I hope this is helpful. As decided by the Administrative Committee of the House of Commons, Chief Executive replies to written Parliamentary Questions will now be published in the Official Report. I will also place a copy of this letter in the Library of the House.
