Self-government Charter

Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to sign the European charter of local self-government.

Mr. Robin Squire

The Government do not intend to sign the charter. The Government support the broad principles underlying the charter, but do not consider local government to be a suitable subject for regulation by an international convention.
