HC Deb 17 November 1992 vol 214 c181W
Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many district general hospitals there are in England.

Dr. Mawhinney

There is no agreed definition of a district general hospital. Acute hospital services may be provided to a district from a single site or multiple site general hospital facilities which may also be supplemented by specialist or single specialty hospitals. In 1990–91 there were 327 hospitals in England with 100 or more acute beds.

Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will provide a list of those district general hospitals in England that do not have a specialist full-time accident and emergency consultant.

Dr. Mawhinney
