To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what progress has been made towards the building of an international passenger station at Ashford.

Outline planning consent has been obtained for the new station at Ashford. I am pleased to say that British Rail has confirmed to me that it is now able to progress the first stage of the project which is the track and signalling work necessary before the station itself can be built.
