To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he proposes to take with regard to benzene levels in unleaded petrol.

The benzene content of petrol, both leaded and unleaded, is already limited to a maximum of 5 per cent. by volume under EC directive 85/210/EEC. New European Community vehicle emission standards which apply from the end of this year will greatly reduce emissions of benzene from new cars.
