Whether they are able to estimate the effect of the recently announced programme of pit closures on the balance of payments.

British Coal have not closed any pits since the end of March 1992. The proposed closure of 10 pits is subject to statutory consultation procedures, while other closures are the subject of a moratorium pending completion of a full and wide ranging review of their prospects.
