HC Deb 11 November 1992 vol 213 cc818-9W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement concerning the report of the Countryside Council for Wales on acid rain.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The report makes a useful contribution to our understanding of the potential threats posed by acid rain to the aquatic environment of sites of special scientific interest in upland Wales; and underlines the importance of the substantial reductions that the Government are seeking in the emissions which lead to acidification. The report acknowledges that more work is needed to identify more clearly the overall effects of acid rain within the Welsh environment and to this end the Welsh Office is currently sponsoring research with the Countryside Council for Wales.
