HC Deb 09 November 1992 vol 213 c632W
Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if a race relations officer has been appointed at the Wolds remand centre; and what training has been given on racism and race issues to prison officers at the Wolds.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

A race relations officer has been appointed at Wolds remand prison. All prisoner custody officers there must receive training in prisoner management which includes a minimum of four hours on racism and race issues during basic training and a further four hours of "anti-discriminatory" training during development training.

Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many inmates are currently held at the Wolds remand centre; and what percentage are from ethnic minorities.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

On 5 November 1992, 237 prisoners were unlocked at the Wolds remand prison. Of these 9.7 per cent. were registered as being from ethnic minorities.

Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if Her Majesty's chief inspector of prisons has inspected the Wolds remand centre since its opening; and whether he is afforded the same powers to investigate and comment on all aspects of the establishment as in state managed prisons.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

Her Majesty's chief inspector of prisons has not yet inspected the Wolds remand prison. He has exactly the same powers in respect of contracted-out prisons like Wolds as he has in relation to prisons managed by the state.
